Synopsis
8/5/08 New York City is one of the wealthiest places in the world, but despite this fact, soaring supermarket prices are forcing more and more people to go hungry. Thousands of Americans are putting aside their pride to ask for help from food banks like Yorkville Common Pantry on Manhattan’s tony Upper East Side. This sudden influx is straining many pantries, forcing them to either turn people away or give less food to each person. Also, in an attempt to reduce the world’s oil insecurity, scientists and researchers are turning to grain harvest and corn as a new source of ethanol. But critics say that the increase in corn ethanol production is causing the price of corn to skyrocket and even more frighteningly is creating a growing shortage of corn worldwide. And, a look at how a new border fence between the U.S. and Mexico is going to affect the small town of Eagle Pass, Texas.
