Simon Barker, un auteur de romans policiers, apprend que Victor Mitchell aurait tué son propre fils. La police arrête immédiatement le père de famille, mais doit se rendre à l'évidence : aucune preuve ne peut permettre sa mise en examen. Peu de temps après, on retrouve Victor, mort dans son bureau...
