En Algérie, Etienne Labrouche est le maire de la petite ville de Tadjira. En novembre 1942, les Américains débarquent et organisent le marché noir avec Léon Castelli, un commerçant pied-noir. Labrouche et Castelli vivent en bonne amitié, jusqu'au jour où ils commencent à se disputer les faveurs de Sylvette...
